Generosity

Last week we learnt what it meant to be generous, and we thought about ways we can show generosity to others in our daily lives.
Giving is one way we can be generous. Giving is not just about money. You can also give things that you own, and your personal time to others. We give because we are so thankful for all that Jesus has given us. When we give, we reflect the love of Jesus, so others can see Jesus through us!

Generosity means giving something away even when it hurts. That’s what Jesus did, and we should too!

Listening to the Bible

Read

Read Luke 12:13-21. The CEV version is probably the most accessible for children, if they are able to read for themselves. You can find it online here.

Watch/Listen

A man came to Jesus, hoping that Jesus would make his brother share his inheritance with him. Jesus told him a story about a rich man who had such a large harvest from his crops that he had to build more storehouses to hold all his grain and his many possessions. Then God said to the man that his life would be taken from him that night. Jesus ended the story by saying, “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Talk

  1. Why did the man come to Jesus?
  2. What did Jesus say about wealth in verse 15?
  3. What happened to the rich man who stored up things for himself?
  4. Do we have anything stored up in our house that we could give to someone who needs it?

Helping it stick

Real Life

Look around your bedroom or playroom and collect some things that you have stored up that you don’t really need. Put it in a bag and give it to a friend or donate it to those in need. Your giving will bless others. Not only will YOU feel good when you are generous, but you will reflect the love of Jesus to others, and this will please God!

Memory Verse

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

Optional Extra

Show generosity to others by drawing a picture and/or writing a letter to a neighbour or for someone at church. You may even want to include a Bible scripture that you like. Deliver the letter to their home, or mail it in the post. By giving your time to make something for others, you will bless them and show them Jesus’s love!
